How do you activate BiT?

BiT is activated by having Link die, then choosing to continue. Immediately after continuing, you must reset your Wii, either via the Home Menu, or by pressing reset on the console itself. What then happens is the reset tries to send you to the title screen, while the continue tries to give you control of Link again. The combination gives you control of Link, on the title screen!

That's really weird.

That's not a question, but yes.

So why does that help you?

There are several things you can do with BiT:

1. Corrupt File
By deleting a file, then saving while it's being deleted, you create an empty file; this file has no name, no play time, and most useful, no hearts. Thus whenever you load this file, Link immediately dies. This is helpful for activating BiT before you obtain bombs.
2. BiTSave
A BiTSave is a way to teleport to a glitched version of Skyloft. It's performed by saving at a bird statue during BiT, then starting a file while the save is happening. This will put the file you loaded in front of the statue you saved at, but Skyloft will be in a half-loaded state. The colors are all washed out, and some actors aren't loaded. This is used at the very beginning of runs to get the Goddess Sword right away; it's also occasionally used to just teleport back to Skyloft when it would be faster than flying there.
3. BiTWarp
A BiTWarp is a limited way to teleport within a map. It's performed by saving and starting a file at the exact same time during BiT. What happens is the save updates Link's XYZ coordinates on the map, but not which map he's in. Thus if the file you're loading was saved in Skyview Temple, and you perform a BiTWarp, you'll end up in Skyview Temple, but at a different location than where you saved. This is used in several places to skip small parts of the game; the first use is in Skyview Temple.
4. Early Thunderhead
Early Thunderhead is a way of opening the thunderhead early (shocking, I know) using a more general technique called BiTLoading. This is most complicated to explain, but essentially you must have saved your file under specific conditions; one example is at the save prompt after finishing Skyview Temple. Once you have that save file, if you select it during BiT, the cutscene for opening the thunderhead will start playing, unless another menu or cutscene supercedes it. What BiTLoading does is load a file as that cutscene starts; then the game writes the data from that cutscene into your loaded file. In this case, that opens the thunderhead up on whichever file you loaded. In any% runs, this is performed simultaneously with a BiTSave; the menu for saving delays the cutscene starting until the file can be loaded.

That sounds useful and complicated. How much time does it save?

BiT as a whole probably saves around 40-45 minutes to an hour; most of that time comes from the Early Thunderhead trick, which saves 15 minutes of mind-numbing sidequest stuff, and skips fighting The Imprisoned the first time around.

Wait, sometimes you run off a ledge in BiT, but later on you don't. What gives?

You may have noticed that right before entering Skyview Temple, I copied my file over to slot 3 then continued. The reason for that is that having that particular save in slot 3 opens the two gates to the academy when you're in BiT. There are seemingly three conditions for that save: it must be in Deep Woods, before entering Skyview Temple, and the log near the Kikwi Elder in Faron Woods must have been pushed down. I call this BiTMagic, because no one has any clue why it works, it just does. Having that gate open in BiT saves about 10-15 seconds each time you go to the academy statues, which means over an any% run it saves around a minute and a half.
